“The Hobbit” by J.R.R Tolkien is my favorite book about the adventures of Bilbo in middle earth.

The Setting

The setting takes place long ago in middle earth. We focus on locations such as hobbiton, the Misty Mountains, Lakeshire, and the forest where elf’s dwell. The book also has the Goblin Mountain previously talked about in my other article. I love the places that are visited, but the misty mountains are not described before Smaug came and destroyed Dale.  My rating for the setting would be 9/10.

The Characters

There are a colorful band of characters in this book. You have hobbits, humans, elf’s, and dwarfs. The dwarfs are kind and brave, the hobbits are hungry and great robbers, the humans are like us in the Middle Ages, and the elf’s have really long hair. They have eagles that can talk and wolf like creatures called wogs. I would rate the characters in this book 10/10.

The Plot

I love the plot of this book. It starts off as we see bilbo, then Gandalf and the company arrive. Gandalf explains that Thoren Oakenshield is the rightful king under the mountain. Bilbo agrees to help them and they set off. They travel through the elven woods that are very dark. They meet the elf king and escape the elves using the barrel system set up by the lake people. They finally march off towards the misty mountains. They find a secret entrance to the trove of gold whilst the dragon is attacking the lake town people. The hobbit, Bilbo, does not slay the dragon however. Instead an archer from Dale (home of Dwarfs) named

Bard. He shoots the dragon on his left side of his chest and kills him. The dwarfs and hobbit are seen as traitors to lake town so the lake people, with help of the wood elves, lay siege to dale. Thoren’s cousin, Dane of the Iron Hills, comes aid Thoren at dale to help with the siege. The goblins and wogs here of this and they attack the lake people and the dwarfs. When all seems lost, the eagles arrive and help the people and they win. But their victory came with a price, Thoren had perished by Bilbo’s side. They claimed Dane, to be king under the mountain. And Bilbo leaves the company with Gandalf and they return to Hobbiton (Bilbo being rich now). There is a surprise at the end but you will have to just read it (or listen to it). I love this story and rate the whole thing a 100/10.
